9 October 2018

Şahin Berber, İstanbul - Hearing of the now-shuttered pro-Kurdish newspaper Özgür Gündem executives and editors was held at İstanbul 14. High Criminal Court today. The court adjourned the hearing until 28 March, to complete the statements of the defendants and to identify the managing editor of the newspaper during the date of the crime.

Defendants Eren Keskin, Reyhan Çapan, Filiz Koçali, Ayşe Berktay, Nuray Özdoğan, Celalettin Can, Ayşe Batumlu and Reyhan Hacıoğlu had all taken on the duty to be the Editor-in-Chief-On-Watch of the newspaper, each for very short periods of time in order to show solidarity with the newspaper. Çapan and Keskin were also sued due to some news articles that were published in Özgür Gündem on 12 January 2016. The court had decided to merge these two cases.

Keskin's lawyer Özcan Kılıç requested to separate his client's case and merge it with the other case file in İstanbul 23. High Criminal Court which consists of the same content. The court decided to review the request of Kılıç, therefore, ordered the case file to be summoned from İstanbul 23. High Criminal Court. The hearing was adjourned until 28 March.
