Journalism and free speech trials: Week of March 4-8

This week several journalism and freedom of expression trials will resume at courts.

Below is a list of this week’s hearings:

March 5, Tuesday

  • Evrensel daily's managing editor Cem Şimşek will appear before Bakırköy 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance, on insult and defamation charges against Treasury and Economics Minister Berat Albayrak.

March 6, Wednesday

  • Trial of Mehmet Baransu and Murat Şevki Çoban will resume at Anadolu 10th High Criminal Court. Baransu and Çoban are charged with possessing and revealing secret state documents in relation to national security.

  • Evrensel reporter Cansu Pişkin will appear before İstanbul 36th High Criminal Court for the first time on charges of "disclosing or publishing the identity of officials on anti-terrorist duties and identifying such persons as target" for writing the prosecutor's name in her news story on Boğaziçi University students' arrest.

March 7, Thursday

  • Evrensel daily's Editor-in-Chief Fatih Polat will appear before İstanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance at 11:05 AM, on violating the confidentiality of communication between individuals charges.

March 8, Friday

  • Mezopotamya News Agency (MA) reporter Yasin Kobulan’s second trial hearing in which Kobulan stands accused of spreading terrorist propaganda in a sequence, will be held at İstanbul 30th High Criminal Court at 2:00 PM.
