Sevda Aydın, İzmir - Hearing of video activist and documentarist Kazım Kızıl and 24 other defendants was held at İzmir 33. Court of First Instance.
Defendants who were detained during the 16 April referendum protests are charged with 'insulting the president' and 'defying the law of assembly and demonstration'. Kazım Kızıl and Baran Ateş were present in the courtroom, whereas the remaining 22 defendants did not attend the hearing in person. Defendants had spent 3 months in detention until being released after the first hearing.
Impartiality of the expert statement in question
Hearing started with identity checks. Afterward, defendants repeated their initial statements. Defense lawyer Aydın Özcan claimed that case expert Cemal Emre Doğan had lost his impartiality when he -in a separate case- stated that the defendants were members of a terrorist organization, calling the other group 'idealists' (nationalist youth organization associated with the Nationalist Movement Party). Lawyer Dinçer Çalım requested the removal of expert Cemal Emre Doğan from the case file. Court adjourned the hearing until 19 December, to review the requests made by the defense, and complete the additional reports within the case file.
