6 September 2018

Cansu Pişkin, İstanbul - Case hearing of Evrensel newspaper editor-in-chief Fatih Polat was held at İstanbul 2. Court of First Instance. Case was reopened after Polat received a conviction from a separate case whilst he was on probation.

In 2013, Fatih Polat had received to a 10 thousand TL fine, and the court had deferred the announcement of his verdict. After being convicted from a separate case, this case in which Polat is accused of 'revealing the identity of a minor' was reopened.

Polat did not attend the hearing in person, however his lawyer Devrim Avcı was present in the courtroom. Lawyer Avcı requested the acquittal of Fatih Polat, claiming that the elements of the imputed offence were non existent. Court rejected Avcı's request and Polat sentenced to another 10 thousand TL fine. Lawyer Avcı stated that they will make a request of appeal.
