Democratic Modernity Journal editor Haydar Ergül will remain in detention

Gizem Edin, İstanbul - Sixth hearing of Democratic Modernity Journal editor Haydar Ergül and 14 People’s Democratic Party (HDP) members in which defendants are accused of ‘membership in a terrorist organization’, was held at İstanbul 22. High Criminal Court. The court ruled to keep all defendants in detention and adjourned the hearing until 18 January 2019.

The hearing was planned to start at 1:00 PM, however, did not start until 6:30 PM. The delay caused a dispute between the relatives of the defendants and the security personnel.

Ergül submitted his defense via the judicial conferencing system, SEGBİS and repeated his previous statements. He requested his acquittal, noting that he his works fall within the ambit of free speech and freedom of press.

The panel of judges ruled to keep all defendants in prison and adjourned the hearing until 18 January 2019.
